Identity Theft is Becoming the Crime of the 21st Century |
| |
As we travel and leave our homes we must take precautions to protect ourselves from the possibility of Identity Theft. |
| |
Identity Theft is when one person’s identification is used or transferred by another person for unlawful activities. |
| |
How is this done? A criminal will steal your purse or wallet and use your credit cards, driver’s license and social security number for their own purpose. If you are traveling for a while, you may not realize your identity has been stolen until you can no longer access your accounts. |
| |
The best way to protect your credit cards when traveling is only to take the “one” you will need. Leave the others in a safety deposit box at your bank or credit union. Contact your credit card carriers and ask them for ways they can help secure your credit from other’s use. |
|
| Most important: |
| |
Be Vigilant…pay attention…and report to Law Enforcement if your cards are stolen! |
| |
|
Scams |
There are many scams out there today. With all the high-tech toys that are available, a thief can use a computer, cell phone, fax machine or other communication devices to get and transfer your money. Scam artists are always finding new ways to take your money. By being vigilant and paying attention to your credit card and bank statements, you can help protect yourself from these scams. |
| |
|
Protecting Yourself |
Here are several ways you can protect yourself: |
- Always check your bank and credit card statements to ensure that only the purchases you have made are on the account.
- Get at least three (3) references before having any work done on your home. Make sure the contractor has a valid, registered license to do the work you want done.
- Get an estimate in writing. A handshake used to be legal binding, but not any more.
- Before you travel, make sure you are aware of expenses for which you are responsible. Know what is included and what costs are extra.
- Call the New Mexico Construction Industries Division at 505-476-4700 if you have questions about a contractor or their license.
- Think before you act. Do not let anyone pressure you into something you are not fully prepared to do.

The CASE Partnership Project’s purpose is to combat telemarketing and elder fraud through faith-based alliances, community membership and law enforcement with prosecutors. This is a co-project between the 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office (Susana Martinez, District Attorney) and the County of Doña Ana. Both the DA’s office and Doña Ana County, along with Law Enforcement (including Adult Protective Services) are working to make this county a safe place for our Seniors to live. |
